Navigating ED Treatments
Available treatment options
We are fortunate to have highly effective medications today. I typically recommend starting with generic Sildenafil or Tadalafil due to their proven safety profile and cost-effectiveness. Tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis ) is often my favourite for patients in long-term relationships because its 36-hour window removes the pressure of clock-watching.
Viagra remains the classic, reliable choice for planned intimacy.
If you experience side effects like facial flushing or headaches, I often switch patients to Spedra or Vardenafil , which are highly selective and sometimes better tolerated. For those who cannot take oral pills—perhaps due to specific heart medications— Vitaros cream is a valuable topical alternative.
If you are unsure which suits your lifestyle, a Trial Pack ED is an excellent way to safely test how your body responds to different active ingredients under medical supervision.
What to expect from treatment
The most common reason these medications 'fail' in my patients is a lack of understanding about how they actually work in the body. They are not magic switches; you still require sexual arousal and physical stimulation for them to take effect.
- Timing matters: Taking a pill after a heavy, high-fat meal can delay absorption by up to two hours. Always take them on a relatively empty stomach for best results.
- Patience is key: Give a new medication at least four to six attempts on different occasions before deciding it does not work for you. Anxiety about the pill working can override its physical effects at first.
- Side effects: Mild headaches, nasal congestion, or a flushed face are common but usually pass quickly as your body adjusts to the vasodilation.
Self-care and prevention
Medication is highly effective, but lifestyle changes can actually reverse mild ED. Beyond the standard advice to quit smoking and reduce alcohol intake, there are physical exercises that can make a profound difference.
Many men think pelvic floor exercises are just for women, but strengthening the bulbocavernosus muscle can significantly improve the rigidity of your erections and help prevent blood from escaping too quickly.
Try stopping your urine flow mid-stream to identify the muscle, then practice clenching it for five seconds, ten times a day.
