Understanding Eye Care — Your GP's Guide

Many of my patients come to me concerned about red, irritated, or weeping eyes, often fearing they have a serious infection that might damage their sight. As a GP, I see eye complaints almost daily, ranging from seasonal allergies to stubborn bacterial infections and the increasingly common modern plague of chronic dry eyes.

What I find fascinating in general practice is how often patients misinterpret their symptoms. For instance, people frequently book appointments complaining of 'watery eyes' and are baffled when I diagnose them with dry eyes. The truth is, when your eyes lack high-quality lubricating oils, they compensate by overproducing watery reflex tears that simply run down your face without actually soothing the eye.

The good news is that whether you are dealing with an infection, an allergy, or environmental dryness, we have highly effective, targeted treatments available. My goal is to help you understand what your eyes are trying to tell you, so we can choose the right drops or gels to restore your comfort and clarity.

Eye Treatments & Care Guide

Available treatment options

We have excellent prescription and pharmacy options depending on your diagnosis. For severe dry eyes, I frequently recommend Celluvisc . It is a thicker, carmellose sodium drop that provides a robust protective layer.

For bacterial infections, Azyter (azithromycin) has revolutionized my prescribing; it only requires a 3-day course, which my busy patients vastly prefer over the traditional drops that demand application four times a day for a week.

Another robust antibiotic option is Gentamicin , which is excellent for more stubborn bacterial conjunctivitis.

For allergic eyes, Opatanol is my go-to for rapid relief of intense itching. It works quickly and only needs to be used twice a day. Alternatively, Zaditen is a fantastic dual-action drop that not only stops the immediate histamine reaction but stabilizes the eye's mast cells to prevent future reactions during allergy season.

What to expect from treatment

Consistency is the secret to eye treatments. With antibiotics like Azyter or Gentamicin, you should see a significant reduction in redness and discharge within 48 hours. Allergy drops like Opatanol often provide relief within minutes.

A practical tip from my practice: many patients complain they can 'taste' their eye drops. This happens because the tear duct drains into the back of the throat.

To prevent this, practice punctal occlusion — press your clean index finger gently against the inner corner of your eye for 60 seconds after putting the drop in.

It keeps the medicine in the eye where it belongs and stops that bitter taste.

Self-care and prevention

Medication is only half the battle. For dry and irritated eyes, environmental management is key. We all know the 20-20-20 rule for screen time, but I add a specific instruction: during that 20-second break, physically squeeze your eyes shut tightly a few times.

This 'hard blinking' action acts like a pump for your meibomian glands (the oil glands in your eyelids), expressing the vital oils needed to stop your tears from evaporating.
