Bisphosphonates

Bisphosphonates are a group of medications used to help maintain bone density and reduce the risk of fractures. They are most commonly prescribed for people with osteoporosis, but are also used for other conditions that cause bone loss.

How Bisphosphonates Work

Bones are constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Bisphosphonates work by slowing down the cells that break down bone (osteoclasts), which allows the bone-building cells (osteoblasts) to work more effectively, resulting in stronger bones over time.

Commonly Prescribed Options

• Alendronic Acid: Usually taken once a week as a tablet.
• Risedronate (Actonel): Available in daily or weekly doses.
• Ibandronic Acid: Sometimes taken as a monthly tablet.

Important Einnahme Guidance

To ensure the medication is absorbed correctly and to protect your esophagus, it must be taken exactly as directed:

• Take first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
• Take with a full glass of plain water only.
• Stay upright (standing or sitting) for at least 30 minutes after taking the tablet.
• Do not eat or take other medications for at least 30-60 minutes after.

• Ensure adequate intake of Calcium and Vitamin D.
• Engage in regular weight-bearing exercise (like walking or Tai Chi).
• Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption.
