Understanding Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) — Your GP's Guide
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlarged prostate gland that affects many men over 50. It can cause urinary symptoms such as a weak stream, needing to go often, and trouble emptying the bladder.

Managing an Enlarged Prostate: Medical Options and Clinical Advice
What is BPH?
The prostate naturally grows with age. When it presses on the urethra, it can disrupt urine flow. BPH is not cancer and does not increase cancer risk.
When to seek medical advice
See a GP if you have urinary symptoms that bother you, blood in your urine, sudden inability to pass urine, or frequent night-time visits to the toilet.
Available treatments
Alpha-blockers (tamsulosin, alfuzosin) relax the prostate muscle. 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride, dutasteride) shrink the gland over months. Combination treatments and procedures such as TURP or UroLift are options for severe cases.
What to expect
Tamsulosin works within days. Finasteride takes three to six months to show full benefit. Most men get good symptom relief from medication.
Self-care
Reduce caffeine and alcohol, avoid drinking large volumes before bed, do bladder training, treat constipation and stay physically active.
